Can You Unsend an Instagram Message?
.jpg)
Yes. You can unsend a message you sent in an Instagram chat. Instagram says it will no longer be visible to people in the chat after you unsend it. But they may already have seen it, so unsending cannot guarantee they did not read or capture it.
Use Unsend for a message you sent. Deleting a conversation from your inbox is a different action and does not remove messages from the other person's chat.
What does unsending an Instagram message do?
Unsend removes that sent message from the chat for everyone included. The control applies to the message you choose, not automatically to every message in the conversation.
Instagram notes that people in the chat may have already seen the message. It also says unsent messages are not included in your Instagram Data Download, and that if the chat or a surrounding message is reported, unsent messages could be included in the report.
How do you unsend a message?
Open the conversation and choose Unsend on the specific message. On Instagram.com, the Help Center describes these steps:
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Find the message you sent.
- Open Options next to that message.
- Choose Unsend, then confirm.
In the mobile app, the menu can appear after you press and hold your sent message. Select Unsend and confirm if prompted. Menu labels or placement can vary by version.
See Instagram's official instructions to unsend a message.
Unsend vs. delete: what is the difference?
Unsend removes your message from the chat for participants; delete chat removes the conversation from your own inbox. Deleting a message or chat on your side does not erase the other person's copy.
| Action | What changes | Other person’s chat |
|---|---|---|
| Unsend a message you sent | Removes that message from the shared chat view | Message is no longer visible there, though it may have been seen already |
| Delete a message for you | Removes it from your view | Does not delete it for other participants |
| Delete the conversation | Removes the chat from your inbox | Does not remove the other person's copy |
Instagram's Help Center explains that deleting messages in your conversation does not delete them for others. Read its guide to removing a message in your Instagram chat.
What should you know before unsending?
- They may have seen it already. Unsend does not undo a notification preview, a screenshot, or someone's memory of the message.
- It is not a recall guarantee. Instagram only says the message will no longer be visible in the chat after it is unsent.
- Reports may include it. Instagram says unsent messages could be included if the chat or a surrounding message is reported.
- It applies to your sent message. To remove something another person sent, you cannot unsend it from their account.
Frequently asked questions
Can you unsend an Instagram message for everyone?
Yes. Instagram says an unsent message is no longer visible to people included in the chat.
Will the other person know I unsent a message?
The message is removed from the chat view, but the person may have already seen it. Do not assume they missed it.
Does deleting a chat unsend the messages?
No. Deleting the conversation removes it from your inbox, not from the other person's chat.
Can you unsend a message someone else sent?
No. Unsend is for a message you sent. You can remove a message from your own view, but that does not remove it for the sender or other participants.
Can an unsent message appear in a report?
Instagram says unsent messages could be included if the chat or a surrounding message is reported.
Can you recover an unsent message in Data Download?
Instagram says your Data Download does not include messages you unsent from your account.
Bottom line
Use Unsend to remove a message you sent from the chat for everyone. It does not guarantee the recipient never saw it, and it is not the same as deleting your inbox conversation.
